Glasgow bids for Commonwealth GamesIn August 2005 Jack McConnell, Scotland's First Minister, announced the Scottish Executive's support for a bid to host the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014. The first minister said that he hoped this decision will inspire thousands of Scots to take up the challenge of sport. Consultants say it will cost more than £200m to stage the event, for which cities in Canada, South Africa and Nigeria are also expected to bid. The hope is that a successful bid will leave Glasgow with a legacy of sporting facilities and help regenerate the City's east end. Glasgow is no stranger to major sporting events having hosted the European Cup Final in recent times, the Special Olympics in July 2005 and the Commonwealth Boxing Championships in August 2005, and Golf's Ryder Cup will be played in Scotland in 2014.
