Facts about Mobile Phones
- Mobile phones are valuable and can be recycled to help the environment.
- Under the recycling scheme, phones that are unsuitable for recycling
are disposed of safely, without harm to the environment.
- In 2001 it is thought around 10 million people changed their mobile
phone - yet less than 5% were recycled.
- In 2003 51 million people in Britain owned a mobile phone.
- In 2004 it was stated that a new mobile phone was being sold every
minute in the UK.
- Around 15 million mobiles are replaced annually in the UK. 15 million
mobile phones laid flat, end to end would stretch
across the Forth Road Bridge more than 850 times! 15 million mobile
phones, stacked top to bottom, would reach over
200 times higher than Mount Everest!
- Throwing your old mobile phone in the bin is not a good idea! Binned
mobile phones end up in landfill sites, where corrosion to their batteries
can cause cadmium to leak into the surrounding soil and cause pollution.
- Developing countries, with no existing landline telephone infrastructure,
rely on mobile phones for vital communication. Working recycled phones
end up in these developing countries.
Facts about old printer cartridges
- Old printer cartridges are valuable and can be recycled to help
the environment.
- Only 5% of printer cartridges are recycled. The rest, worth approximately
£57 million, are buried in landfill sites. They could be helping
worthwhile charities - including Revival Radio.
- It takes more than 1.5 pints of oil to make a new
toner cartridge. Old toner cartridges can be reused.
- In the last decade it is estimated that printer cartridges worth
around £500,000,000,000 were dumped in landfill sites. They
could have been used to provide much-needed cash to worthwhile charities
- like Revival Radio.
So Put your old mobile phones, inkjet and toner printer cartridges
to one side.
